Life as Art
Mike Duncan's Alaia

Did you ever wonder what it would have been like to surf in Hawaii, back in the early days of surfing?  The first time someone stood on a board, it must have been a magical moment for them - I know it was for me.  The tropical beauty of the pristine islands, the turquoise water on a lush shoreline with perfect waves!  The Alaia speaks to me of that time.  Seeing Tom Wegener's friends on his website - riding these boards - it's just amazing.

Now, we have a chance to experience what the ancient Hawaiians did - and you can do it too.  It doesn't have to cost a fortune - maybe $50!

Mike Duncan is a good friend, and an unassuming guy who believes in doing things rather than just talking about it.  He skates, surfs, and makes his living as an artist.  When I first started talking about making a board, it was Mike who encouraged me and got me started.

Mike's board (see the photos below) is made out of pine with an oak stringer.  He used dowels and waterproof glue to put it together.  Urethaned it, and has had a lot of fun on it - and you can too!  Half the fun of surfing is living it.  Stop talking about, and put one together for yourself.  Alaia's make awesome boogie boards, and go much faster.  If you have the skill to stand up on it, my hat goes off to you!

Don't forget to check out the New Smyrna Beach skatepark!
